Coursework Clock

Designing a classroom timer that saves coursework progress between lessons, with separate classes, task instructions and a clear board display.

Coursework Clock is a classroom timer I built to help teachers manage coursework that runs across several lessons. It brings the time remaining, task instructions and available marks together in one display, so students can see what they are working towards and teachers can pick up where the previous lesson ended.

The classroom problem

A standard countdown works well for a single activity, but coursework is often split into sections that take several hours to complete. Different classes move at different speeds, and resetting a timer each lesson makes it easy to lose track. I wanted a tool that remembered progress for each class and each section.

Designed around real lessons

Teachers can start and pause individual section timers, add or remove time, and manage multiple classes independently. Each class has its own colour theme and light or dark appearance, making it easier to recognise the group on screen.

Board view enlarges the countdown and task information for classroom projection, with a simpler set of controls. Separate teacher comments can act as a private lesson log or be selected as reminders that rotate on the board. Task marks stay visible alongside the instructions.

The first version supports Year 11 Engineering coursework. Its saved workspaces are connected to Wix accounts through Google sign-in, keeping each teacher’s classes and comments separate.

Try the Coursework Clock

The public demo uses sample tasks, timings and marks. You can try the controls without signing in; demo changes clear when you reload the page. Approved teachers can sign in with Google to save their own progress between lessons.

Room to grow

The next step is to make the coursework structure reusable for other subjects and year groups, including product design and the arts. The aim is a practical teaching tool that can adapt to different courses while keeping the classroom display clear and straightforward.
